What Does It Mean to Empower Someone?

The word empowerment has become part of our everyday vocabulary. We talk about empowering employees, empowering investors, empowering communities, and empowering people to make better decisions.

But what does empowerment actually mean?

To me, it means helping someone recognize their value, expand their possibilities, and have a greater voice in determining their own future.

That definition has taken on an even deeper meaning through my involvement with the Tammy Lynn Center (TLC).

As a board member, one of the areas I care most about is empowering TLC clients and the remarkable team members who serve them. The Center's mission is built around supporting individuals with developmental disabilities and their families, but the impact goes well beyond programs and services. It is about creating opportunities for people to learn, grow, participate, contribute, and live meaningful lives.

And empowerment works in both directions.

TLC's clients deserve to be empowered to pursue their own goals and experience as much independence and choice as possible. At the same time, TLC's team members need to be empowered with the resources, support, training, and encouragement necessary to do extraordinarily important work every day.

That idea resonates deeply with me because empowerment is also at the heart of how I think about investing.

At Empowered Portfolios®, I have always believed that investing should not simply be about turning over money to someone else and hoping for a good outcome. Investors should understand what they own, why they own it, how much risk they are taking, and how their investments connect to the life they want to live.

Knowledge creates confidence.

Confidence creates choices.

And choices create empowerment.

The same principle applies far beyond investing.

Sometimes empowerment is financial. Sometimes it is educational. Sometimes it means giving someone a voice. Sometimes it is simply making sure a person knows that they matter and that someone believes in their potential.

That is one reason I am especially pleased that Empowered Portfolios is sponsoring the Tammy Lynn Center's October appreciation event.

Supporting TLC is not simply about writing a check or putting a name on an event. It is an opportunity to support an organization whose work reflects something I have come to value enormously: helping people make the most of the lives they have been given.

Our individual abilities may be different. Our circumstances may be different. But everyone deserves the opportunity to contribute, to be respected, and to experience the dignity that comes from having some measure of control over their own life.

That, to me, is empowerment.

And perhaps that is one of the most meaningful ways we can make money make a difference.

Invested Interest™ is about more than investing. It is about investing in people, possibilities, and the communities around us.

This October, I am grateful for the opportunity to support Tammy Lynn Center—and even more grateful for the opportunity to be part of its mission.
